This unit will be used to shred lithium ion cells designed for use in electric vehicles in a range of conditions (new and end-of-life). The overall requirements of the test chamber are defined below but we would like as part of the project to build strong partnerships with the technology providers so that we can secure the design and supply of a system that can be adopted for a range of battery testing applications.. The test chamber should provide safe working conditions for shredding lithium ion cells and modules from electric vehicles. The test and observation facility will be used for research and development of lithium-ion batteries, and lithium-ion battery recycling. In Particular, it will be used as a safe environment to comminute lithium-ion batteries. The comminution equipment does not form a part of this tender. General characteristics A free standing external structure containing an enclosed test chamber that can contain equipment and a small number of lithium ion batteries, and an observation room linked with an observation window. The test and observation chambers should be climate controlled for human comfort. The test chamber should be able to safely contain a thermal runaway event, and should filter all gasses which may leave the chamber. The observation chamber should be able to contain two observers, one or more computers, and a way of feeding data and controlling equipment between observation and test chambers. There is the potential for integration with the automotive industry, permitting collaborative use in order to safety test developing battery technologies.
